Beach cafe company helps to rescue street children in Goa

The award winning Venus Company, one of the UK's leading beach cafe and shop operators, has supported a local charity in South Devon that is helping to rescue deprived children from the streets in Goa.

The company provided food for an 'India Evening' organised by Christians Together in Dartmouth, who listened to a talk by Anita Edgar, founder of the El-Shaddai Charitable Trust Ltd. The event raised £230 towards the Trust's project to provide homes and education for street children in Goa. After the talk, Indian food and music were provided and Indian goods were on sale.

Anita of Norton Park, Dartmouth, was on holiday in Goa when she noticed scores of children living off the streets, rag-picking and begging and resolved to do something about their situation. "They have no birth certificates, so are denied medical treatment, education and a future," she said.

Following the earthquake in Gujarat on 26 January 2001, Anita has since opened four children's homes and the first non-formal school in Goa. She now encourages tourists to Goa to support the Trust's aims.

Michael Smith, managing director of The Venus Company, said: "We are delighted to support a local charity that is doing such wonderful work in Goa to help educate and house those deprived children and to give them a better life."
