Beach cafe company provides healthier animal bedding
One of the UK's leading beach cafe and shop operators is recycling packaging for animal bedding and is helping to provide employment, training and development opportunities for disabled people in Torbay.
The Environmental Gold Award Venus Company group based in South Devon collects cardboard packaging from its 3 beachside cafes and Beach Shop at Blackpool Sands, East Portlemouth and Bigbury on Sea every day for Torbay Industrial Services at Paignton.
They are used by Torbay Industrial Services (TIS) to produce up to 500 bales per week of healthier animal bedding per week for horse, donkey, cattle & poultry owners in South Devon and beyond.
Michael Smith, Managing Director of The Venus Company, said: "This partnership is an important part of an integrated Green Programme which forms the essence of our business philosophy. This scheme is a great way of recycling almost 100% of our waste cardboard packaging that would otherwise end up in landfill and in the process help to support jobs, training and personal development opportunities for up to 12 local people with physical and learning disabilities."
TIS provide employment, training and development opportunities for people with disabilities in Torbay. The company has just introduced its new line of animal bedding, which it claims is healthier and safer for horses, donkeys, cattle & other animals.
Pat McAuley of TIS said: "We are delighted that The Venus Company is able to recycle cardboard packaging, which we can use as the raw material for our new line of healthier animal bedding.
"The bedding is more absorbent than shavings with lower levels of ammonia/less odours. It is non-toxic, unpalatable and compressed. This means it is easier to handle than bales of wood shavings or straw and there is less wastage. Horse & donkey owners spend less time mucking out.
"More imprtantly, it contains no fungi, spores, parasites or wheat seeds so is particularly effective for horses with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease."
