Venus Company makes beach cafe environments more attractive
Britain's leading beach cafe operator is to spend over £50,000 on improvements to its three beach cafes in South Devon.
The environmental Gold Award winning Stoke Fleming-based company is to redevelop and refurbish its beach cafe at East Portlemouth in a £35,000 investment to double its size and improve the facilities for visitors.
The refurbishment will enable the Venus Company to significantly improve the service & facilities to the 50,000 visitors to East Portlemouth, many of whom use the foot passenger ferry to Salcombe and the coastal path.
Managing Director Michael Smith said: "The redevelopment and refurbishment programme will improve our ability to provide visitors with an up to date facility capable of providing top quality product and service to residents and visitors to the South Hams.
Taking place in the autumn, after the peak holiday season, the programme at East Portlemouth will include doubling the number of customer service points and tripling the space available for refrigeration and storage as well as providing a service bay for delivery vehicles. The garden at East Portlemouth, which overlooks the Salcombe estuary, will also be extensively re-landscaped and planted. Michael Stopher of Kingsbridge has designed the scheme.
The Venus Company has just completed landscaping the alfresco dining terraces at its beach cafes at Blackpool Sands near Dartmouth and Bigbury on Sea near Kingsbridge. Landscape designer Jo Stopher of Kingsbridge created the overall design and planting scheme for the environmental improvements. Essential Earthmen of Dartmouth carried out the work.
Michael Smith said: " Our purpose is to make the cafes a more attractive and comfortable place to eat, particularly in inclement weather, as well as creating a more natural environment. We have used reclaimed timbers from Devenport Docks and local fauna as a main feature in the design. This fits nicely with our commitment to the environment. Another key feature has been the installation of radiant space heaters. This will make the dining area a cosier place to be during our cooler days. Overall, the changes provide the basis for a comfortable year round alfresco dining experience."
