S. Devon woman wins top prize in £12,000 local quiz competition
A 84 year old woman from West Charleton has won the top prize in a £12,000 local quiz competition organised by Britain's leading beach cafe operator, which has also raised £100 for South Hams charities & good causes.
Mrs Frances Mary Rogers of West Charleton, near Kingsbridge, claimed the first prize in the 'Sin & Win' competition launched by The Venus Company, which operates three beach cafes at Blackpool Sands, Bigbury-on-Sea and East Portlemouth.
She wins a luxury short break for two of two night's stay at the Buckland-Tout-Saints hotel near Kingsbridge, including dinner, bed and full English breakfast. The historic Queen Anne house is set in 3.5 acres of private grounds.
"I'm delighted to have won and I'm really looking forward to going to Buckland-Tout-Saints Hotel" said Mrs Rogers, who may take her daughter Christine with her for the short break.
Mr John Speed from Stoke Fleming took the second prize of two night's stay at the Dart Marina hotel and Mrs Ceri Jayes from Kingsbridge the third prize of three night's stay at the Coombe Cross hotel at Bovey Tracey.
The Junior competition winner was five year old Abigail Chapman of Dartmouth. Her winning tiebreaker was: "It is good to live where we live because of the flowers, the beaches and the hot sun."
The Venus Company, based at Stoke Fleming near Dartmouth, devised the 'Sin & Win' quiz competition to enable local residents and visitors to the region to put their local knowledge to the test.
In the process, the free prize-draw competition - which lasted all summer - has raised £100 in funds for the South Hams Radio Trust, which will distribute the money to local charities and good causes.
Over 25 companies from the South Hams and the immediate surrounding areas provided nearly 50 prizes for the competition, which also actively promoted top quality local products and services. They included six fantastic short breaks, five delicious meals and lots of South Hams products.
All entrants had to do was to correctly answer seven simple quiz questions testing their local knowledge of the South Hams and then complete a tie-breaker in no more than 20 words. Mrs. Rogers winning tiebreaker was: "Here I was hatched, here I was matched and I'll love South Hams lifestyle until I'm despatched."
The Venus Company's Managing Director Michael Smith said: "We're delighted to have received so many entries for the quiz and in the process raise so much for local charities and good causes."
The local quiz competition supported a £8.7 million national 'Seven Deadly Sins' summer promotion by Wall's ice cream for its Magnum ice lollys. During the period to September, Walls launched seven new limited edition flavours based on the seven sins, Lust, Sloth, Gluttony, Greed, Jealousy, Revenge and Vanity.
Other prize winners were: Mr T Dudgeon, Kiddlington; Mrs R Dance, Bristol; Mr J Donlon, Luton; Mr T Rogers, W Charlton; Mr D Rogers, Kingsbridge; Mrs H Chapman, Dartmouth; Mrs C Dudgeon, Burford; Mrs Rogers, Kingsbridge; Mrs S Lane, Bigbury on Sea; Mr K Mayne, Kingsbridge; Mrs L Towers, Brixham; Mrs C Brown, Brixworth; Mr G Foot, Kingsbridge. The Venus Company will contact directly all the competition winners.
During the Winter months, the Venus Company will open its Blackpool Sands and Bigbury on Sea cafes from 10am to 4pm every Saturday and Sunday. Between Boxing Day and New Year's Day, they will be open every day.
