Summer environmental & local history competition launched at St. Christopher's Primary school
TREASURE OUR BEACHES - an exciting, learning at leisure, summertime promotion aimed at 100,000 families with children aged 5 to 11 years was launched this week at St Christopher’s Primary School, Staverton by Head Teacher, Jane Keynon and pupils.
The “Treasure Our Beaches” competition, sponsored by the award winning and environmentally friendly firm, The Venus Company, aims to help educate children about local history and the importance of looking after the environment, particularly the beaches.
The Venus Company, based at Stoke Fleming, has enlisted the help of local primary schools, in distributing the Treasure Our Beaches competition leaflet, which offers prizes of £500 of computer equipment for the winning child, plus £1,000 of equipment for his or her school, as well as £150 worth of Venus vouchers for the winning child’s family.
The competition invites families to visit the local museums at Totnes, Dartmouth, Salcombe and Kingsbridge and the Venus Beach Cafes at Blackpool Sands, East Portlemouth and Bigbury on Sea so as to pick up a Treasure Hunt Map and search for Clues that will help answer seven environmental and local history questions.
Managing director Michael Smith said: “We are delighted to be able to launch the Treasure Our Beaches summer promotion at St Christopher’s School. The competition will hopefully give families some fun learning days out this summer with its enticing Treasure Hunt theme and prizes. It will also help raise awareness of better business practice with environmental and community benefits.”
Head teacher, Jane Keynon said “We are delighted that we are able to promote Treasure Our Beaches to our school children and their families. It is a fun approach to learning at leisure with a serious underlying message, that environmental care is so important at home, work and at play, particularly on our very special local beaches. We can also use the promotion to support school projects from an environmental, geographical and historical perspective”
Over 100,000 Treasure our Beaches competition leaflets will be distributed through primary schools in the South Hams, the three Venus alfresco Beach Cafes at Blackpool Sands, East Portlemouth and Bigbury on Sea and through other tourist outlets. The promotion runs from May half-term through to the end of the summer holidays with over 200,000 adults and at least 150,000 children invited to take part. No purchases at the Venus Cafes or museum entry charges are necessary to take part.

The winning correct entries received by the promotion’s closing date of 6 September 2004 will be entered into a prize draw.
The Venus Company has just won a prestigious Business Commitment to the Environment Award for environmental best practice, presented by Energy Minister Stephen Timms in London on 20 April.
This follows on the Company’s recent success in winning the highly coveted overall Environmental Award in the 11th Annual Devon Environmental Business Awards as well as winning the category award for Environmental Management.
The Venus Company, a Gold Award Winner of the South Hams Green Tourism Business Scheme, has also raised more than £12,000 towards Green Lanes conservation in Devon for the benefit of local communities.
