Venus Beach Cafes to profile excellent local businesses
BRITAIN’S leading beach café operator is urging South Hams residents to put their local knowledge to the test in a quiz competition with nearly 50 prizes donated by some of the area’s local businesses.
More than 25 companies from the South Hams and the immediate surrounding areas have provided prizes for the £12,000 competition devised by The Venus Company of Stoke Fleming to actively promote top quality local products and services
The competition will run alongside a £8.7 million national ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ promotion by the country’s leading ice cream manufacturer, Wall’s, for its Magnum ice lollys, which features the launch of seven new limited edition flavours.
The eight-month campaign kicked off in March with Lust and Sloth, and will be followed by Gluttony and Greed in May and June, Jealousy and Revenge in July and August and Vanity in September.
Residents and visitors are able to enter the free prize-draw competition through The Venus Company’s three beach cafes at Blackpool Sands, East Portlemouth and Bigbury-on-Sea. All they have to do is to correctly answer a series of quiz questions testing their local knowledge of the South Hams and then complete a tie-breaker.
Managing director Michael Smith said: "Living in the South Hams we tend to be aware of our stunning countryside, but the outstanding quality of some of our hotels, restaurants, attractions and food producers is largely forgotten. These 27 businesses represent a selection of the very best. This promotion is essentially about promoting South Hams products to South Hams residents. Higher awareness will in turn promote the area’s excellence to visitors."
Local producers have supplied 49 prizes – 25 for adults and 24 for children – with the top prizes being short breaks for two at Buckland-Tout-Saints, Dart Marina, Kitley House, Royal Castle, Coombe Cross and Edeswell Farm and delicious meals for two at Tsangs Chinese, Willow Vegetarian, R&B’s Diner, King’s Arms Strete and Café Cache.
Other prizes include: lots of products made by local producers including Sharpham Vineyard, Riverford Dairy, West Country Beef, Westaways Sausages, The Venus Company, and Burts Crisps; local attractions Paignton Zoo, Dart Pleasure Craft and Dartmouth Museum; and products from Kandy Toys of Exeter, Allsop & Pitts, Gul, Circle One and Panama Jack.
The Venus Company has organized a publicity campaign including media advertising in the South Hams Gazette newspaper group and on South Hams Radio station to promote the competition. In addition, the company expects to raise several hundred pounds by donating 1p for every purchase of the Magnum ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ ice lollys to a local charity.
The Venus Company’s beach cafes are open from 9am to 5pm daily during the period April to June. During the peak holiday period from July to August, they stay open longer.
