Award winners champion organic links
The UK’s leading environmentally friendly beach café and shop operator, the Venus Company, has announced new trading links with fellow award winning organic suppliers in Devon and Cornwall.
Occombe Farm, the organic farm and education centre at Preston, near Paignton is to supply organic floured baps and beef from its in-house bakery and traditional butchery made to an agreed Venus specification. Venus will use the organic burgers and baps at the four Venus Cafes - 3 in South Devon and at Tolcarne in Cornwall.
Seasalt, the independent Cornish fashion company who design and source locally made clothes certified to Soil Association standards, has been chosen to supply a new range of corporate clothing for all Venus employees and to supply the Seasalt brand at Venus Beach Shops at Blackpool Sands and Tolcarne Newquay.
Both Venus and Seasalt are recognised as Beacon South West companies. Venus and Occombe Farm have both won Devon Environmental Business Initiative Awards. Venus and Seasalt are both Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Sustainable Award winners.
The Venus Company is a great champion of sourcing local food and drink products and in 2007, is using over 30 local producers from Devon and Cornwall.
Venus Company, managing director, Michael Smith said: “This is the first time that we have been able to source to our specification, both organic bread and meat from one local company. We are committed to education and sustainable farming and Occombe Farm fits the bill perfectly! We are pleased to support in this way the Farm’s charitable parent organisation, Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, as all profits go towards local conservation work.”
Occombe Farm won a 2006 DEBI Award for Sustainable Products and Services.
Dominic Acland, the Trust’s director is thrilled with the new deal. “This is the first time that the farm shop at Occombe has expanded into supplying trade caterers and it is a great development for us."
We are excited to be working with the Venus Company, recognised as leaders in their field and with a strong environmental pedigree. It is a positive partnership - we have learnt a great deal and made new contacts in terms of environmental suppliers.”
Seasalt has been trading as a family business since 1981 and now has 8 shops in Cornwall plus global sales through its successful online trading arm. Renown for its quality, organic clothing and strict ethical and fair trading manufacturing stance,
Seasalt won the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Sustainability Award for Best Environmental Initiative in 2005. Seasalt is to supply Venus’ 16 full time staff and 40 strong pool of seasonal staff with a range of Venus branded clothing made from Turkish grown organic cotton.
On the appointment of Seasalt as the choice supplier, Neil Chadwick director said: “I met Michael Smith from Venus through the SW Beacon network of companies and as our companies both share similar ethical and environmental values, we were delighted to be asked to supply our range of clothes for Venus staff and customers.”
Michael Smith of Venus added: “It’s great to find a local company able to supply our requirements both in corporate, functional wear and in stylish leisure clothing for retail sales in our beach shops at Tolcarne, in Newquay and Blackpool Sands in South Devon. We’re all looking forward to wearing the new look this spring!”
