All year round tourism for Tolcarne Beach
Another boost to extend Newquay’s tourist season is being made by the Venus Company at Tolcarne Beach with improved facilities for all weather al fresco dining right on the beach. Venus, the UK’s top environmentally friendly beach café and shop operator, with four sites in Cornwall and Devon, has improved facilities at the Venus Café to include an alfresco deck area with a fully retractable roof and full height glazing to cater for customers in any weather all year round.
Venus has invested £ 65,000 on the new alfresco dining facilities and tasteful signage including a piece of wrought iron “artwork” in the shape of an archway at the top of the steps at Narrowcliff and in character with the seafront promenade’s Victorian balustrade. Both the Mediterranean style café patiola and the art signage have been made possible by grant funding from Taste of the West in Cornwall and European Objective One funding.
Angie Coombs Taste of the West’s Manager in Cornwall says: “This is a fantastic example of a really innovative development as the alfresco dining area really extends the opportunity to enjoy the beach throughout the season. Venus are a wonderful example on how to maximise the benefits of using local produce, their menus truly reflect the wealth of quality ingredients available in Cornwall.”
The new developments will contribute to the resort’s sustainable development by adding to the resort facilities open all year round and playing to Newquay’s strengths of a magnificent coastal playground for all ages.
“As three sides of the new patiola are glass, visitors are protected from the wind and rain, which means that if the past few weeks are anything to go by, it will be a boon for those on holiday and of course local people, who want to sit and enjoy the stunning beach and sea views at Tolcarne whatever the weather, said Michael Smith, Venus managing director. “We think of Tolcarne as Newquay’s favourite family beach and the investment demonstrates Venus’ ongoing commitment to the resort’s regeneration.”
In 2005, Venus was the Overall Winner and Best Small Business in the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Sustainability Awards. The same year, Venus was honoured with The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development, providing the best alfresco Mediterranean style dining experience in a UK beach setting whilst integrating environmental and social care into every business decision.
