Wildlife charity & Venus link up for Marine Education
Devon Wildlife Trust is once again linking up with Venus to run a free Rockpool Ramble for young people to find out more about the colourful and varied wildlife that inhabits our coastline.
The Rockpool Ramble will be held on Saturday 22 March at Bigbury-on-sea from 11.30am. People who attend should get to see velvet swimming crabs, blennies and brittle starfish amongst a range of other shorelife.
The event is the latest in a range of activities that have been run since the New Year as part of the Venus Beach Wildlife Fund project. The partnership has worked with 4 schools during that period.
Each school has been visited and given a talk on rockpool wildlife with the children later visiting Blackpool Sands beach for a guided rockpooling session. In addition, beach activities, litter picks and surveys have taken place all with the help of Venus staff and volunteers.
Cat Ridout, DWT’s Marine Awareness Officer said: “Learning about the beach and how to look after it is vital and an important part of the work of the Devon Wildlife Trust. Over 100 local school children have benefited from this fantastic project with Venus. This ramble is yet another opportunity for us to teach people about the amazing rockpool life we have on the South Devon coast. We will also take the opportunity to tell people about the Seashore Code and the need to look after our most precious marine environment.”
Michael Smith, Venus managing director said: “The popularity of these events is down to the children having great fun in learning about the beach and marine wildlife. The Easter Rockpool Ramble promises to be another enjoyable event for all the family.”
People interested in coming to the event should meet outside the Venus Cafe at Bigbury-on-Sea. There is no need to book, just turn up on the day, but all children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information please contact Cat Ridout on 01752 862538 or info@wemburymarinecentre.org
