Fun beach wildlife events in Newquay

Fun beach wildlife events in Newquay

• Easter Beach Clean and Scavenger Hunt, Tuesday 14th April, 11.00am -12.30pm, Tolcarne Beach, Newquay

• Rockpool Ramble, Saturday 5th September, 10:30am – 12.00pm, Tolcarne Beach, Newquay

Cornwall Wildlife Trust is teaming up with the Venus Café to run two free events to help locals and visitors learn about the wonderful wildlife on Tolcarne Beach, Newquay. These events will give people the chance to explore this very special beach and learn more about the marine wildlife that lives there.

Come and join the Trust’s Education Officer at the first event, the ‘Easter Beach Clean and Scavenger Hunt’ on Tuesday 14th April running from 11.00am -12.30pm. Firstly you will seek out litter that could be fatal to beach wildlife and remove it using equipment provided by the Trust. Youngsters will then be invited to search for natural treasures left by the sea and its creatures, such as Mermaid’s purses and colourful shells, in a scavenger hunt. There will be prizes for the most litter collected and the most treasures found, and you are sure to see some live creatures like sand-hoppers and sea slaters on the shore.

The second event, a ‘Rockpool Ramble’ with the Trust’s Marine Education Officer, will be held on Saturday 5th September from 10.30am -12.00pm. While exploring the rock pools you could see Cornish sucker fish, blennies, velvet swimming crabs and sea anemones, and you will learn all about how these live, and why it’s important to look after our beaches so they can thrive. Afterwards you could use this newly acquired knowledge over lunch by asking for one of Venus café’s free marine colouring books.

If you would like to attend either of these events booking is essential, please contact Kirstie Francis at Cornwall Wildlife Trust on (01872) 273939 ext. 203.

The Trust is funded to run these events through the Venus Beach Wildlife Fund. This fund has been set up from the proceeds of the visitor gifting scheme in place at the environmentally sustainable café on Tolcarne. Five pence from every cup of tea and ice cream flake sold goes into the pot, raising a £1000 a year for the Trust. This money is then used exclusively for Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s wildlife education work.

Michael Smith, Managing Director of Venus, says,

"We set up the Venus Beach Wildlife Fund so our customers can support the Venus ethos of 'Loving the Beach' for everyone's enjoyment, now and in the future.”

Jasmin Brown, Marketing and Fundraising Co-ordinator for Cornwall Wildlife Trust says,

“Cornwall Wildlife Trust have received funding from the Venus Beach Wildlife Fund for three years, which is a valuable contribution to our work. The fund offers great way to give something back to the local community by running these educational events. Funds like this can support a number of different projects, which really do make a difference. I would urge any businesses who’d like to give something back to contact the Trust and we can help you set up a fund like this.”
