Event details•Dolphin Rescue Demonstration with BDMLR on Saturday 29th May at 2pm, Tolcarne Beach, Newquay

Cornwall Wildlife Trust is once again organising wildlife education events in partnership with Business Supporter Venus Café at Tolcarne beach, Newquay. In 2006 Venus Company Ltd set up the Venus Beach Wildlife Fund from the proceeds of their very successful visitor gifting scheme, which is in place at their environmentally sustainable cafés at Tolcarne and Watergate Bay. Five pence from every cup of tea and ice cream flake sold goes into the Fund, raising a fantastic £1000 a year for the Trust’s wildlife education work.

The 2010 events will start with a ‘Dolphin Rescue Demonstration’ on Saturday 29th May at 2pm with the British Divers Marine Life Rescue. This event is open to all, so everyone can come along to learn how to rescue a stranded dolphin and return it to sea. Participants must be prepared to get wet!

On August 10th the Trust is hosting a ‘Rockpool Ramble’ from 10.30am to 12pm. This event will be run by Fox Club, the Trust’s junior membership, and will give children the chance to learn why it’s so important to care for our beaches, enabling marine wildlife to thrive. Visitors will get to explore rockpools with the Trust’s Marine Officer to spot creatures such as the Cornish sucker fish, blennies, velvet swimming crabs and sea anemones in their natural habitat.

The Trust and Venus invite local residents and visitors to attend these free events, which have been planned to give people the chance to learn about this very special beach and its marine wildlife. As well as educational beach activities Venus’ scheme has also funded the Trust to work with local schools, such as St. Bishop’s Primary School. These sessions aim to make children aware of what they can do to look after their beaches, which helps to protect the flora and fauna that inhabit the ocean and shorelines of Cornwall.

Michael Smith, managing director of Venus says, "We set up the Venus Beach Wildlife Fund so that our customers can support the Venus ethos of 'Loving the Beach' for everyone's enjoyment, now and in the future.” Venus are also pleased to offer children attending these events a free drink of squash at the café, where visitors can use their newly acquired knowledge over lunch by asking for one of Venus’ free marine colouring books.

Serena Pettigrew-Jolly, Marketing and Fundraising Co-ordinator for the Trust says “The Venus Beach Wildlife Fund has provided Cornwall Wildlife Trust with funding for marine education work for four years, and it is an excellent example of how a visitor gifting scheme can offer such a great way to give something back to the local community. Funds like this can support a number of different projects around Cornwall or fund the Trust’s core work, and the proceeds can really make a huge difference. If any businesses would like to give something back to the environment please contact the Trust and we can help you set up a successful scheme such as this.”

The BDMLR Dolphin Demonstration is open to all and there is no need to book. Participants for the demonstration to meet Trust representative at Venus Café at 2pm. If you would like to attend Fox Club’s Rockpool Ramble booking is essential, so please contact Kirstie Francis at Cornwall Wildlife Trust on (01872) 273939 ext. 203.
